This is a grooming process used to remove dead outer blown guard hairs in mainly wire coated breeds but not exclusively. This includes most of the Terrier group but can also include Cocker Spaniels, Irish Wolf Hounds and Schnauzers. However, the texture of a dog’s coat can be affected by genetics, whether the dog has been spayed or neutered and the dog’s age.
The hair is pulled from the coat by hand instead of using clippers, keeping the coat tidy, a rich colour, shiny, strong, healthy and waterproof. This is normally carried out twice a year in spring and autumn. Stripping knives and stones can also be used.
If the coat is not manually removed, the hair follicle can become clogged and matted and this can lead to irritation for the dog or lead to more issues later.

We offer doggy teeth cleaning using Emmipet, an ultrasonic toothbrush that has been clinically proven to remove plaque and improve the breath and oral hygiene of your dog! The micro bubbles generated by the toothbrush and Emmipet toothpaste penetrate deep into the gum pockets (up to 12mm in soft tissue), killing any bacteria lurking there, which will improve the look and smell of your dog’s mouth, their dental hygiene and overall health. Breaking down the tartar takes times and so a number of appointments will be required; the number of sessions will be dependent on the condition of your dog’s teeth at the start of the treatment. It can be hard to predict the exact number required but we usually recommended a course of at least six treatments.
Please contact us to discuss your dog’s needs.
• Most dogs cope very well with the grooming process and many of them actively enjoy it, but for some dogs it can be difficult, particularly if they have had a less than positive grooming previously.
• To help your dogs get used to being groomed, we offer familiarisation sessions where we work with your dog to identify which parts of the grooming process causes them distress. Our aim is to then gently desensitise them to what is causing their anxiety.
• These sessions are offered on a ‘two groomers to one dog basis’ and will usually last for one hour initially.
• Our goal is to get your dog to the point where they can be groomed by anyone, but in the hope that they will stay with us!
"This is the first occasion we have sent our English Springer Spaniel to a dog groomer, and from the initial booking through to collection we found Lisa at Betty & Bramble's extremely friendly and helpful in her approach, and very professional. On collection it was clear that Bunty had been very well cared for. She now looks amazing! We highly recommend Lisa."
